Westwind Primary School
Phoenix, AZ
The Pendergast Elementary School District passed a bond election in November 2001 to build a new 76,040 SF primary school on an existing campus. Due to extreme population growth in the area, the existing school is scheduled to serve fifth to eighth grade, while the new primary school will house kindergarten through fourth grade. New play fields were designed and constructed between the existing building and the proposed new primary school to accommodate new school construction.
The new school was designed as a two-story building because of site constraints, with the administration building located in the center of the new campus. The district wanted to make a statement to the community by providing a high quality school. Integral color masonry, metal roofs, and canopies with an earthy color scheme form the essence of quality design. The massing of the two-storied structure is broken up by “V” shaped columns with covered canopies to break the scale down to the height of the students. Due to the fast-track construction schedule, the grading and utility work and the building construction bid as two separate packages.
