John C. Lincoln Hospital North Mountain

As with other metropolitan Phoenix hospitals, John C. Lincoln’s North Mountain Hospital has seen a significant increase in Emergency Room visits and their 20-year old ED department and 40-year hospital was in need of major upgrades. Working closely with the staff of JCL North Mountain, Orcutt | Winslow developed a master plan of projects that would replace JCL NM’s Emergency Department, as well as upgrade many existing departments.
One of the Valley’s newest Emergency and Level I Trauma Centers opened in October of 2007 on the John C. Lincoln North Mountain campus. The $60 million expansion doubled the size of the Emergency and Level I Trauma Center, to 37 beds and was designed with comfort and quality of care in mind. The clinical architectural design is based on evidence based design principles with specific measurable goals, such as providing patient privacy, minimizing staff travel distance to supplies & equipment, reducing noise levels and reducing patient waiting times.
Long waits, common in most Valley emergency departments, are not only minimized by the triage system, but also by readily available support services and new processes made possible by the center’s architectural and Interior design.
Even the decor of the facility is designed for quality care. Clinical research has shown that nature has a healing effect on patients. Soft/indirect lighting (to reduce glare on patients, beds and gurneys), natural colors and natural elements incorporated into everything from wall glass to photography create a peaceful, calming atmosphere throughout the new center. Designers implemented a new master palette within the new expansion, while phasing
