Native American Heritage Preserve Master Plan

Native American Heritage Preserve Master Plan

Working with a group of Native Americans from tribes across the country, Orcutt | Winslow help do develop a concept for the Preserve, initially intended to be located on county land north of the Central Arizona Project Canal in North Phoenix. In working with the representatives of several tribes, the intent created was to have a physical demonstration area where tribes from various geographic areas could construct replicas of their traditional housing and village communities. A center for presentation of the arts and culture of Native Americans would be an interpretive center to explain the individual characteristics of each tribe and regional or cultural grouping. Classes for young tribal members were anticipated for carrying on the traditional crafts and language instruction. Areas for performance, story telling and traditional food preparation and dining were also incorporated. Most important was the intent to create a secure and controlled repository for each tribe, where their language, traditions, records and customs could be stored to ensure their survival.
