Orcutt|Winslow is Developing a New Sustainability Action Plan in 2021
It has been 10 years since our firm developed its first Sustainability Action Plan. A lot has changed in the industry and within our firm in the last decade. Many of the goals we set for ourselves have been achieved, or have become irrelevant. This new Sustainability Action Plan will be continuously updated instead of being a document that sits on a shelf collecting dust. It will include a transition from a focus on energy to a focus on carbon. This plan will set the direction and priorities needed to achieve our goals for the AIA 2030 Commitment, and will reinforce the sense of urgency recently outlined by Architecture 2030 and the 2021 IPCC Climate Report.

Behind the Design: Cherokee Elementary
Young saguaros often begin life under a nurse plant; specifically a Palo Verde tree. Saguaros are extremely slow growing and fragile at their earliest years. This is a parallel with young students. Much like cacti locating themselves in the shelter of the Palo Verde canopy, students will be able to look to Cherokee as their nurse plant. This notion of a nurse plant, used as the overall backbone of the design concept, provides both living and architectural adaptations, abstracted. |
