Balance of Nature Planned Community

Balance of Nature's global mission is to educate the world about the benefits of living a life of health and wellness. Orcutt | Winslow is working toward this mission to create an environmentally, economically sustainable planned community. The design team has developed a master plan for a globally-recognized community. This master plan showcases innovative design elements that encourage healthy behaviors, enhance critical care and healing, and promote a culture of wellness; all consistent with a triad of health (chemical, physical, spiritual): Eat, Do, Think.

Vi at Cavasson

Vi Living, a national senior living developer/operator specializing in high-end senior living, is proposing an exciting new community in North Scottsdale. Their latest development is the 321-unit Cavasson project that will feature over 470,000 sf of desert-modern retirement living. Vi at Cavasson will feature high-quality amenities including a variety of resident dining experiences, fitness, activity, and life-long learning programs; as well as several outdoor living/activity amenities to complement the interior offerings.

Kiva Elementary School

Yuma Regional Medical Center Foothills Health Campus

The Yuma Regional Medical Center's commitment to access to care, affordability and health options are key drivers in their decision to develop a new health campus in the Foothills community. This two-story 59,297 sf facility will provide family medicine, pediatrics, ob-gyn, clinic services, urgent care, as well as a free-standing emergency department for East County residents. The emergency department will have eight observation rooms, eleven treatment rooms, one isolation room and two trauma rooms. The panel shared their experience as users of the Energy to Care program, including strategies for talking about energy savings with the C-Suite and how to join the program, discoveries made through program participation of easy energy fixes, benefits to operations and the value of friendly competition between hospitals. Panelists also emphasized energy use reduction as a major component of any climate action or resiliency planning. When asked what were the biggest challenges in facility management in the next 5-10 years, the consensus was finding and retaining talent, and keeping hospitals resilient.

Orcutt|Winslow is Developing a New Sustainability Action Plan in 2021

It has been 10 years since our firm developed its first Sustainability Action Plan. A lot has changed in the industry and within our firm in the last decade. Many of the goals we set for ourselves have been achieved, or have become irrelevant. This new Sustainability Action Plan will be continuously updated instead of being a document that sits on a shelf collecting dust. It will include a transition from a focus on energy to a focus on carbon. This plan will set the direction and priorities needed to achieve our goals for the AIA 2030 Commitment, and will reinforce the sense of urgency recently outlined by Architecture 2030 and the 2021 IPCC Climate Report.
Behind the Design:
Cherokee Elementary

Young saguaros often begin life under a nurse plant; specifically a Palo Verde tree. Saguaros are extremely slow growing and fragile at their earliest years. This is a parallel with young students. Much like cacti locating themselves in the shelter of the Palo Verde canopy, students will be able to look to Cherokee as their nurse plant.
This notion of a nurse plant, used as the overall backbone of the design concept, provides both living and architectural adaptations, abstracted.
