San Jorge Children’s Hospital

San Juan, PR

The 60,000 SF, four-story hospital expansion included a new entrance, lobby, and a 33-bed emergency department on the first floor; an outpatient surgery and 12-bed pediatric intensive care unit on the second floor; a 22-bed pediatric oncology unit on the third floor and a shell space for future expansion on the fourth floor. The project was fraught with challenges, including performing the work within a congested urban environment and keeping the adjacent existing hospital fully operational during construction. Special coordination efforts were necessary to avoid disruption to ongoing services of the existing hospital including the interruption of power and water service and mitigating construction noise. While planning the expansion, it was determined that the existing generator could not accommodate the existing facility and the new four-story patient tower. A new 1500 KW, 500 SF emergency generator building was designed and constructed out of cast in place concrete to withstand 145 mph winds, housing the generator’s emergency power and fuel storage.
